Grieving a loss can be a difficult experience. When you\u2019re grieving, you may have emotional, physical, mental and \/ or spiritual responses. And there\u2019s no one way to grieve \u2014 everyone works through it differently. Being aware of your thoughts, feelings and reactions after a loss can help you support yourself and heal in ways that work for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2    id=\"what-are-some-common-types-of-loss\"\n    class=\"acf-block-heading \"\n    >\n    What are some common types of loss?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Although everyone\u2019s definition of loss is unique, some common examples that may bring on feelings of grief include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/breaking-and-living-single-life\/\">break up<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a change in religion \/ spirituality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/understanding-separation-divorce-and-custody\/\">divorce<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a life-altering change in mental \/ physical health (e.g. the diagnosis of a <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/dealing-illness-how-cope\/\">chronic illness<\/a>, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a move from a familiar place to a new place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the death of someone \/ something (like a loved one or a pet)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/how-cope-change-friendship\/\">end of a friendship<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: Experiencing one of these things doesn\u2019t automatically mean that a person will have feelings of grief related to them. Every person is affected differently by events in their life.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<h2    id=\"what-are-some-common-responses-to-loss\"\n    class=\"acf-block-heading \"\n    >\n    What are some common responses to loss?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>People often need time to adjust and process when grieving a loss. It\u2019s hard to know what your experience will be like, and how long you may grieve for. It may be reassuring to know that everyone responds to loss differently, and that grief can come with any mix of emotions and reactions. Seeking supports and ways to heal may help you process. Try to be patient with and kind to yourself \u2014 it can take time to start to feel better. These ideas can help support you as you navigate grief:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ask Elders \/ folks in your community to reflect with you in a healing circle (a gathering of people that\u2019s especially important in some Indigenous cultures) to share memories \/ experiences, talk about feelings, pray, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>attend a formal gathering if possible, like a <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/grief-and-loss-what-expect-funeral\/\">funeral \/ memorial<\/a>, to honour the loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>build a memory box, collage or photo album of items that remind you of positive memories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>connect with a safe adult (e.g. a counsellor, doctor, therapist, etc.) for support if you need it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>practise a <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/self-care-can-be-more-than-bubble-baths-heres-our-guide\/\">self-care<\/a> routine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reach out to friends \/ family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>spend time in nature or sit in quiet reflection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>try prayer, <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/practise-meditation-mindfulness-with-these-tips\/\">meditation<\/a> or another spiritual \/ religious ritual that makes sense for you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/letter-writing\/\">write a letter<\/a> to \/ about a person you\u2019ve lost (you can read it from time to time if it feels helpful)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>write a poem or <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/how-to-start-journaling-today\/\">practise journaling<\/a> to explore and reflect on your feelings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Grieving a loss can be a difficult experience for anyone to go through.
