However, certain people and groups are more likely to experience stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may be targeted because of their:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>abilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>age<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>economic status<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ethnicity and\/or race<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gender identity or expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>national origin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>physical appearance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>religion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sexual orientation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination often come from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>inequalities in society<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ideas learned about other people\/groups from family members, friends and\/or the media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>not spending a lot of time with people who are different from you in some way<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>not being open to different ideas and ways of living<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2    id=\"a-stereotype-is-an-assumption\"\n    class=\"acf-block-heading \"\n    >\n    A stereotype is an assumption<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>A stereotype means assuming that a group of people who share some characteristics also share certain attributes. In other words, when someone assumes something about you because of one part of your identity. Stereotypes are often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>negatively impactful<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>overly simplistic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dangerous<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unfair<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2    id=\"prejudice-is-a-belief\"\n    class=\"acf-block-heading \"\n    >\n    Prejudice is a belief<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Prejudice is when someone has a belief (usually negative) about a person or group based on a stereotype. The belief is usually based on a person\u2019s membership (or assumed membership) in a certain group. Prejudice also divides people based on stereotypes. Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ableism:<\/strong> negative attitudes based on physical and\/or mental abilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cissexism:<\/strong> negative attitudes toward people who don\u2019t identify with the sex they were assigned at birth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Homophobia:<\/strong> negative attitudes toward members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Racism:<\/strong> negative attitudes based on race, ethnicity and\/or culture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sexism:<\/strong> negative attitudes based on gender identity, gender expression and\/or sex assigned at birth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Xenophobia:<\/strong> negative attitudes based on national origin\/country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2    id=\"discrimination-is-an-action\"\n    class=\"acf-block-heading \"\n    >\n    Discrimination is an action<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Discrimination is when someone acts on their prejudiced beliefs. It can also be systemic, like the policies and practices put in place to assimilate First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis peoples. Examples of discrimination include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a manager promoting a cisgender employee over a transgender employee whose performance is stronger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a racialized youth being monitored without cause while shopping in a store<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a health-care provider refusing to treat\/diagnose a patient who is part of a particular racial\/ethnic group<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2    id=\"what-are-the-negative-effects-of-stereotypes-prejudice-and-discrimination-on-mental-health\"\n    class=\"acf-block-heading \"\n    >\n    What are the negative effects of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination on mental health?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>People may experience mental ill-health and other challenges as a result of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. People who are the targets of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>have low <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/feeling-low-boost-your-self-esteem-these-tips\/\">self-esteem<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experience mental disorders such as <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/anxiety-disorders-facts-about-most-common-types\/\">anxiety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/living-depression-symptoms-causes-treatments\/\">depression<\/a> or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>begin to believe negative stereotypes about themselves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experience intergenerational trauma<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>feel like they lack control of their own life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experience issues at school and\/or work (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/tag-cloud\/?tags=bullying\">bullying<\/a>, harassment, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>start to lose <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/8-ways-foster-hope-your-daily-life\/\">hope<\/a> in the future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experience <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/feeling-lonely-here-are-some-ways-feel-better\/\">loneliness<\/a> and isolation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>feel like they\u2019re unable to trust others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experience physical effects (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/all-night-get-better-sleep-these-tips\/\">trouble sleeping<\/a>, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2    id=\"what-can-i-do-about-stereotypes-prejudice-and-discrimination\"\n    class=\"acf-block-heading \"\n    >\n    What can I do about stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"acf-block-callout-box acf-block-callout-box--right acf-block-callout-box--image\" style=\"background-color: ;\">\n\n\n        \n\n        \n            <div class=\"acf-block-callout-box__wrapper acf-block-callout-box__wrapper--image d-flex\">\n\n                \n                <div class=\"acf-block-callout-box__content\">\n                    <h2 class=\"acf-block-callout-box__title mt-0\" style=\"color:\">Want to talk to your peers?
