{"id":2202,"date":"2017-11-19T10:24:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-19T14:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/patrice-bergeron-on-the-importance-of-reaching-out\/"},"modified":"2023-01-13T11:36:04","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T15:36:04","slug":"patrice-bergeron-importance-reaching-out","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/patrice-bergeron-importance-reaching-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Patrice Bergeron on the importance of reaching out"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"lead\">NHLPA member and Boston Bruins forward&nbsp;Patrice Bergeron talks about the importance of reaching out and how young people can deal with bullying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a professional athlete skating on hockey\u2019s biggest stage, Boston Bruins alternate captain Patrice Bergeron has always believed in speaking up and reaching out. \u201cWe\u2019re fortunate to be in a position to be able to do something,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2003-04, as an NHL rookie, Bergeron gained more confidence in himself through conversations he had with leaders on the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This also taught him the importance of paying it forward \u2014 something he continues to do now. Through the Patrice\u2019s Pals program, Bergeron has distinguished himself as a leader and role model for youth. The program brings young people and their families from local hospitals and other children&#8217;s organizations to enjoy a Bruins home game and speak with Bergeron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Bergeron met a young person who was <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/what-do-if-youre-experiencing-bullying\/\">being bullied<\/a> at school, he wanted the opportunity to talk to him. \u201cHe was going through a tough time with <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/article\/what-bullying-0\">bullying<\/a> and I just wanted to be there for him. I also wanted to give him some confidence, to make him know that he\u2019s a great kid and people are there for him. I wanted him to realize that there are good things to come and he did the right thing by speaking up,\u201d said Bergeron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Bergeron, this is an important message to any young person who\u2019s dealing with a problem, big or small. Here is what else Bergeron had to say about bullying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Speak out: <\/strong>\u201cWhen you\u2019re going through a tough time in your life, it affects your confidence and sometimes, you don\u2019t feel like speaking about it,\u201d said Bergeron. \u201cBut it can snowball into something bigger. Speaking about it can make a world of difference.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stay positive:<\/strong> \u201cWe have some new players on our team, young guys who haven\u2019t played very long in the NHL,\u201d noted Bergeron. \u201cIt\u2019s important to be there for them. Sometimes, not everything will go the way you expected. But it\u2019s important to stay positive \u2014 things will turn around.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ask for help:<\/strong> \u201cSometimes you don\u2019t want to share things with those you are closest to \u2014 your parents, your siblings or your friends. I think having someone to hear you out, someone who is there for you and understands what you\u2019re going through \u2014 that\u2019s very important. It\u2019s not easy to talk and ask for support, but people are always there to help you,\u201d said Bergeron.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Patrice Bergeron believes it\u2019s important to reach out with whatever you\u2019re going through. <\/em><em>If you\u2019re dealing with bullying or any other issue, you can talk to a parent\/caregiver, teacher or other safe adult.
