With <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-involved\/programs-resources\/resources-caring-adults\/stress-help-young-person-life\/\">stress<\/a>, fear and anxiety increasing across Canada and the world, it\u2019s natural for you and the young people around you to have questions\/concerns about the novel coronavirus and its impacts. Here, Kids Help Phone shares some tips for supporting the young people in your life during this unprecedented time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Communicate: <\/strong>start an <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-involved\/programs-resources\/open-conversation-young-person\/\">open conversation<\/a> with the young person. Let them know you\u2019re always available to help answer their questions. Having an honest, open discussion can often give them perspective and reassurance when things seem to be overwhelming or hopeless. It can also help them prepare for the challenges they may face in the weeks and months to come.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tailor what you share to their developmental stage and specific questions they\u2019re asking. For example, \u201cI wanted to talk to you about the virus you\u2019re hearing so much about. Basically, it\u2019s a germ that\u2019s making some people sick. We\u2019re all being extra careful so we don\u2019t get ourselves or other people sick. That\u2019s why we\u2019re staying home right now. I can show you some other ways we can protect ourselves. But first, I wondered if you had any questions?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check in often:<\/strong> young people may be riding a roller coaster of emotions right now, from disappointment over cancelled events to fears about the health of their friends and relatives. Let them know that you\u2019re a person they can talk to about anything, any time, anywhere. Check in on their <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-involved\/programs-resources\/open-conversation-young-person\/starting-conversation-about-emotional-health-well-being\/\">emotional health and well-being<\/a> regularly. Remind them whatever they\u2019re thinking\/feeling is OK.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Calm fears:<\/strong> if the young person is <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/how-can-i-cope-with-my-feelings-about-the-future\/\">worried about the future<\/a> and what it may look like for them, emphasize that they\u2019re not alone. Everyone has questions and is experiencing uncertainty at this time. Try to <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-involved\/programs-resources\/open-conversation-young-person\/fostering-hope-how-build-resilience-youth\/\">foster hope<\/a> and resilience by listening to the young person and practising empathy. Tell them you\u2019re in this together! It\u2019s also important to model effective ways to manage anxiety and stress during this time. One way young people learn to <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-involved\/programs-resources\/resources-caring-adults\/how-to-teach-young-people-emotional-self-regulation\/\">manage their emotions<\/a> is by watching caring adults around them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get the facts:<\/strong> it\u2019s essential for everyone to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/stories\/novel-coronavirus-outbreak-what-parents-should-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accurate information<\/a> from trustworthy sources. You can visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/coronavirus-disease-covid-19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Government of Canada\u2019s website<\/a> together to get the facts about COVID-19 and how you can protect yourselves (e.g. proper handwashing technique, etc.). You can also take some time to learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/digital-media-literacy\/general-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">media literacy<\/a> with them and how they can cope with <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/how-to-cope-with-triggering-news-stories\/\">triggering headlines<\/a> in the news.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Practise online safety: <\/strong>while young people are at home during school and business closures, their screen time may be rising. It\u2019s important to chat with them about <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-involved\/programs-resources\/open-conversation-young-person\/online-safety-tips-caring-adults\/\">online safety<\/a> and to set clear guidelines. Their devices can also be a way to connect with friends, peers and family members. This can help them <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/feeling-lonely-here-are-some-ways-feel-better\/\">combat loneliness<\/a> while practising <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/how-to-cope-with-social-distancing-during-covid-19\/\">social distancing<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Teach acceptance: <\/strong>unfortunately, certain groups are experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/get-info\/embracing-differences-what-you-can-do-about-prejudice\/\">discrimination<\/a> as a result of the pandemic. Remind the young person that this is never OK and that COVID-19 is no one\u2019s fault. Share information about the effects of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination and what they can do to take a stand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reach out: <\/strong>let the young person know they\u2019re never alone, even during their toughest times. You can reach out to Kids Help Phone together for support. We\u2019re an <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshelpphone.ca\/our-services\/\">e-mental health service<\/a>, which means youth can connect with us 24\/7 without having to make face-to-face contact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Take care: <\/strong>now more than ever, we need to nurture our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. You can do some research together on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/parents\/learning\/view\/curio.ca-a-teacher-resource-is-now-free-for-families-to-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">activities<\/a> you and the young people in your life can do while at home.
